Boss DR-880

Boss DR-880

I have been wanting to play around with drum machines for a while now. Maybe it will add a little something to what we do at church. There is two problems, though. I’ve never used one and our band may not be used to playing with a click.

So for the past few months, I’ve been having the band practice with a metronome click during rehearsals and in our set in the services. Sometimes it’s good and other times the drummer has to click it off because we’re all off the time. Better to be with the band than to be with the click. So that still needs more work.

I borrowed this drum machine from GWills a few weeks ago. This is the Boss DR-880 drum machine. It has great sounds of the bat and over 500 preset patterns to choose from. Plus, you can plug in your bass or guitar and “sample” your playing to integrate into the patterns.

Now being so used to the GUI of a software digital audio workstation (DAW), I thought this drum machine would be the same thing. Easy pezy. Well, I was wrong. After looking at the manual, it isn’t like that at all. You have to create patterns, then join them together, then finish the song. It’s still doable. But it’s almost like I have to learn how to do it all over again. Almost an impossible feat, if you ask me, because I really don’t have the time. Anyone have any pointers for me?
